CHAPTER 9 - I NEED A DIVERSION

Gary grabbed some rocks with his webbed feet and flew high into the air and dropped them. They clinked and rattled on some large rocks, hit a tree and broke some branches. Just enough noise to gain the attention of the two men. Off they went into the direction of the sound to investigate. As they left and went out of eye sight, Barry approached and entered without being noticed by anyone.

Barry slid down his night vision goggles and could see everything. He made his way in the direction Gary and he had discussed on their makeshift map, now tucked in his pocket but he didn’t need it. He had memorized it. Calculating every step he was to take, Barry maneuvered through the tunnels, able to see every crevice and crack, and would hide as needed as other people approached. He could clearly make out the writings on the wall that were a blur to Charlie, Gary and Jerry.

“What strange art,” thought Barry. It appeared to tell stories of the past for this group of people. He could see mountains and rivers, with doors to the mountains. Barry surmised that they lived outside the glacier before but have colonized it to be their home. Why, was still unclear.

Barry continued to make his way to find the entrance to the jail area. He put on his hat to match his trench coat, he didn’t want to look out of place. He stood on his hind legs and walked casually trying to blend in as much as possible, found the tunnel entrance and made his way to it directly. Just as he was about half way there he heard from behind him. “You there!”

Barry ran, skulked behind a house, took off his coat and hat and threw it open the other way in one quick motion as he went the other way on all four legs. The coat and hat landed behind another house a good meter from the corner. He was able to hide in a crevice and could see his hat and coat being examined by his pursuer. The skinny man with no teeth and long dark, shaggy hair, was looking in every direction to try and see who had been wearing it.

CHAPTER 10 - DUCK DOWN

The commotion went on for a few more minutes but Barry didn’t move. He waited and waited until, finally, the crowd had dispersed. Barry saw the skinny man walking farther into the cavern with his jacket and hat.

He made his way to the tunnel entrance and followed his same technique in the art wall passageway, hiding and crouching, listening for unusual sounds.

Finally he arrived in the wooden celled area and saw the table with an empty chair. He made his way to the wooded wall and he heard a flutter and knew that it was Gary joining him. The note Gary sent with the food was on the table and the wooden cells were empty. Charlie, Jerry and Cherrie were gone.

Barry turned to Gary, “we have to find the skinny man that took my coat and hat. He must be with Jerry.” “And Charlie and the sheep,” Gary added. Barry wasn’t listening, he was already headed back to the passageway but heard voices coming in.

“Quick, hide,” said Barry to Gary. Barry was already out of site when the guard who sat at the table came in with the skinny man.

Gary wasn’t able to hide anywhere and tried to fly out the hole in the ceiling but as he was fluttering upward, he saw a net coming down from above him.

There was nothing Gary could do, he was trapped in a net as he fell back to the ground with a THUD! He started making his animal sound. "Quack, QUAck, quACK," not really sure he was doing it right.

"Quiet down, duck, we aren't going to hurt you," the skinny man said lying.

Barry watched from his dark crevice hiding place as they dragged Gary away. As long as Gary kept quacking he new which way to go.
