Discussion on Baby Furniture for the Nursery

Bringing your baby home from the hospital is scary. There is so much to do to be ready for the first baby welcomed to your family.

Where are they going to sleep? What are you going to sit on? Do they need clothes? What size? Are they breast fed or bottle fed? There is so much to consider.

Now that I have created a list in your mind, we have built a checklist of the things you will need and the things you will not need but will probably want. That isn't all, however. Where those thing are placed is also beneficial. Remember, this area will be used with the lights off!

Be sure to review the placement or layout recommendations of the nursery furniture.

Below We List a Bunch of Products, most of which we are affiliates for...

Our List of 11 Essential Pieces of Baby Furniture for The Nursery Room

Piece 1. - The Crib

The baby is going to sleep and a comfortable place is essential. We have listed one here that has some good reviews.

Piece 2. - A Crib Mattress

The crib mattress would be better to be waterproof or water resistant. The diaper is going to fail and a wet mattress is a cold mattress.

Piece 3. - Dresser

Your newborn baby is going to have a lot of clothes. Clothes for every occasion. And they are small and a headache to fold. But they are also going to get very dirty. Even a small creature like a newborn baby can make a mess of an outfit very quickly.

Piece 4. - A Comfortable Chair

Some people I know have opted for a rocking chair. I say get a recliner. Most nights are going to be long at first and a comfortable place to sit will help. A comfortable place to lay back and manage to sleep in between the crying is good to.

Piece 5. - A Night Stand

On top of this is going to be a lamp or a sound machine or a baby monitor. Inside of it is going to be burp clothes. Put this right next to the recliner so they are easy to grab.

Piece 6. - A Garbage Can

There is going to be garbage generated daily. At our height of diaper changing, we were going through a 270 count box of size one diapers every month. (Find them at Costco, Huggies only, the Kirkland ones smell weird and chaffed our daughter more so than other brands). You will need a place to put those diapers.

Piece 7. - An Area Rug

Believe it or not, the baby is going to be spending some time on the floor. If you have carpet every where, this may not be necessary. If you have pets, it will be helpful. If you have wood floors, it's essential.

Piece 8. - Curtains

Your newborn baby is going to sleep during the day. To block the sun, a nice curtain or heavy drape is very beneficial to make it a little darker and keep your baby sleeping longer. We made several, and we also bought fun fabrics to dress up the room.

Piece 9. - Sound Machine

You and your house can be noisy at times. The best way to keep the baby distracted from the noise is to flood their room with a type of white nose. We use the product in the link above every night and our kids are between the ages of 3 and 8 now. They are used to having the noise and they sleep better with it on.

Piece 10. - Baby Monitor

I joke that having this next to your bed defeats the purpose of having a baby sleep in the a different room, however, these devices are very useful. There are ones that just do sound which is what we opted for or there are really fancy ones that show real-time video.

Piece 11. - A Night Light

You will be spending a lot of time in this area in the dark without a light. The light on your phone may be too bright and to try and carry that and a baby is difficult. You may also have to navigate around toys on the floor and other objects. Best light up the floor. We found this one and have really enjoyed it. The light is adjustable if you press the chicks head!!

Bonus Piece 12. - Changing Table

I do not consider this essential. A baby can be changed on the floor, on the bed or any number of places. I do not recommend the kitchen table or anywhere food is prepared. A changing table can also double as a dresser or add additional storage if needed.
