What Name?

Finding the right name is harder than you may think.

In some families, they pass down their names from father to oldest son. Even daughters take on the name of beloved grandparents and parents.

After the first kid and with a desire to make a name special to this specific person sets in, where do you start?

The Problem

There are books that give ideas on this. There are also websites that list the most popular and most unique names on the planet. There are plenty of ways to find a name. I want to focus on the importance of a name.

Inspiration for a Name

With my oldest daughter, we looked at all of these resources to find a name. Books, the internet, even family history. None of them seemed to fit this precious creature.

My wife ended up having an emergency c-section and our oldest daughter was born one month to the day early. Being new parents and the anxiety of an emergency c-section, we really hadn’t had a name picked out yet. We had some ideas but still none of them seemed to fit.

After the emergency procedure and the arrival of a healthy premature baby, my wife and I sat in the hospital room asking what we should name her.

We got the paperwork and thought it had to be filled out in the hospital. So we talked about people that had influenced us instead of ideas from a book, the internet or our heritage.

One specific instance came to my wife of a doctor's lecture she had attended where he discussed changing ourselves. This doctor introduced his wife and talked of the importance of how she had changed him.

This struck my wife and she suggested using the name of this doctor's wife to name our daughter. So we did. She is still very precious to us, therefore, I am not going to list her name here.

That is how important the name of my daughter is to me. I don’t even want you to know what it is.

As you research the name of your special people in your life, consider these factors.

Naming Factors

  • What do you want them to be when they grow up?
  • Use a name that is special to them.
  • Consider how you intend them to use that name.
